Great trout fishing venues in Kent and Sussex

Spring Hill Trout Waters

Spring Hill, near Tunbridge Wells, Kent, is one of my favourite fisheries for fly fishing lessons. The fishery consists of three clear spring fed waters which which are stocked with top quality rainbow and brown trout. The abundance of insects provide for superb fishing, especially in the evenings when hatches are frequent and dry fly fishing will often produce great results. Hatches include midge, caddis, mayfly, damsels and most other insects found in southern England. Facilities include a lodge, toilet, sale of terminal tackle and rod hire.

Brick Farm Lakes

Brick Farm Lakes, near Herstmonceux, is a friendly rural trout fishery set in 50 acres of beautiful East Sussex countryside. There are three lakes totalling about 4 acres and all are very well stocked with rainbow and some brown, blue and golden trout. An ideal venue for the experienced or the novice angler. The lodge is a beautiful green oak framed, warm, dry and friendly place with a log fire, excellent facilities and great coffee.

Yew Tree Lakes

Yew Tree Trout Fishery offers nymph and dry fly fishing of the highest quality. Set in 30 acres of wild flower meadows and woodland in the High Weald of Sussex, the fishery provides anglers with a quiet and secluded site in which to enjoy their sport. The 6 acres of lakes are stocked with browns and rainbows that have an average size of 1lb and 2lb respectively. The fishing is ideally suited to those anglers interested in imitative dry fly or nymph fishing, especially for the browns. Floating or intermediate lines with long leaders are best suited for these waters.

Bewl Water

Bewl Water is one of the country's most famous trout fisheries. At 770 acres it is one of our great reservoirs, situated in beautiful Kent countryside about eight miles south east of Tunbridge Wells. As well as wide expanses of water there are intimate bays and inlets to explore from the bank or a boat. Over half of its 17 mile shoreline is accessible for fishing from the bank. The reservoir is popular not just with anglers but also with birdwatchers, ramblers and picnickers. Bewl has recently been taken over by new management and plans are under way for an improvement in facilities and restaurants as well as improved stocking with trout.

Powdermill Reservoir

Powdermill Reservoir is located near Sedlescombe on the borders of East Sussex and Kent and is one of the most beautiful waters in the south east. The 56-acre reservoir is stocked with rainbow trout of exceptional quality which have a reputation for being hard fighting and well proportioned fish. There is also a good head of resident brown trout. Powdermill reservoir has a reputation for exceptionally good Mayfly hatches and the fishing can be spectacular when the hatch is on. The reservoir is managed by Hastings Fly Fishers Club and new members are always welcome as are visiting day-ticket anglers.
