Spring fishing at Spring Hill

Just had a great morning tuition session with Andy at Spring Hill.

Andy had already started fly fishing but was keen to improve his technique and get more consistency and achieve better turnover of the leader and fly. We had a really fun session working on the basics of the overhead cast and then moved on to roll casts, dealing with different wind directions, heavy flies and sink tips and even double hauling.

Then Andy put it all into practice and was sending out some beautiful loops and his presentation was greatly improved. But did the fish approve? Spring Hill's rainbows were clearly in a finicky mood with the water temperature still cold. Andy started getting some takes with a well sunk fly but they were gentle plucks and very difficult to hook.

Andy started speeding tip the retrieve when he felt a hint of a take and that converted a few to properly hooked fish. The rainbows are in great condition at the moment and the fights were fast and hard as Andy had to pile on the pressure to keep the fish out of the weeds at the bottom end of the main lake.

Hopefully the water will start to warm in the coming weeks and the fishing should get better and better.

We finished the morning with three released fish and some much more confident casting - mission accomplished!
